School of Surgical Technology

The Maine Medical Center (MMC) School of Surgical Technology prepares highly qualified and motivated students to be members of a modern surgical team. A Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) works closely with the surgeon, anesthesiologist, registered nurse and licensed practical nurse to deliver direct patient care before, during, and after surgery. Click here to view MMC's School of Surgical Technology Teaching Philosophy.

Surgical technologists work principally in the operating room, performing functions and tasks that provide a safe environment for surgical care. They contribute to the efficiency of the operating team and support operating surgeons, nurses, and others involved in operative procedures. Surgical technologists also work in other patient service settings calling for special knowledge about asepsis or about methods of making or keeping an environment antiseptic.
