Cancer Care For Women

Surgical Procedures

Hysterectomy:

Surgical removal of the uterus through the abdominal wall or through the vagina. The presence of benign or malignant tumors is the most frequent reason for hysterectomy. Hysterectomy does not necessarily include removal of ovaries and tubes. There are different types of hysterectomy, including:

  • Abdominal - removal of the uterus through an abdominal incision
  • Cesarean - surgical removal of the uterus at the time of the cesarean section
  • Partial or Subtotal - removal of the uterus, leaving the cervix uteri in place
  • Total - removal of both the body of the uterus and the cervix
  • Radical - surgical removal of the uterus, adjacent lymph nodes, and a part of the vagina
  • Vaginal - removal of the uterus through the vagina

Vulvectomy:

Surgical excision of the vulva. The presence of benign or malignant tumors is the most frequent reason for vulvectomy.

Removal of Pelvic Mass:

This is done either with laparoscopy (minimally invasive surgery) or through a larger incision, depending on your specific circumstances. If cancer is found, this usually results in removal of both tubes and ovaries in addition to a hysterectomy and other biopsies.
